New Street Signal Box, 1964

Architects: Bicknell and Hamilton in collaboration with R L Moorcraft.

Constructed from horizontal pre-cast concrete cladding units hung from a reinforced concrete frame, the Grade II listed New Street Signal Box’s dramatic, strong sculptural form and now weathered surfaces inspired the following three pieces.

Comprising of four parts, bottom, centre, top and back. The bottom and top pieces are constructed from a single concertinaed sheet which is hand sewn to the back support.

 A combination of Pale Grey Colorplan 135gsm paper and 270gsm card were used alongside vintage endpapers that cover some of the concertinas and the centre panel.

Constructed from twenty individual triangular prisms, attached to a back support each unit is carefully torn to emulate weathered concrete, which in turn reveals the rainbow beneath.

The following Colorplan 135gsm papers were used: Pale Grey, Dark Grey, Real Grey, Ebony Black, Cool Grey, Smoke, Amethyst, Royal Blue, Turquoise, Emerald, Forest, Factory Yellow, Citrine, Mandarin, Bright Red and Scarlet.

Medium: Paper and Card. Dimensions: H:580mm W:495mm D:55mm.

This piece was the original concept for New Street Signal Box 2.

Based on the wall that surrounds the New Street Signal Box. Constructed from a single sheet of textured Korean paper (backed with Pale Grey Colorplan 135gsm paper). Divided into three the paper is joined to create one long strip which, once folded, is hand sewn to the back support.

The following Colorplan 135gsm papers were used: Pale Grey, Dark Grey, Real Grey, Cool Grey, Smoke, Amethyst, Royal Blue, Turquoise, Emerald, Forest, Factory Yellow, Citrine, Mandarin, Bright Red and Scarlet.

Medium: Paper and Card. Dimensions: H:150mm W:770mm D:35mm.

All work is for sale. Edition Sizes: 1-5, though each piece is made to order and as such unique.
